Danny knew all about Easter. Nicker lived in the ocean and didn’t know much about it until Danny explained – or tried to. Gordie … well, he lives in a cavern underground. As you might remember, he didn’t even know about birthdays until Danny and Nicker shared theirs with him.
With the growing excitement, Gordie was curious. He wanted to know what was going on, and what it had to do with tortoises and if it involved grapes. Nicker tried to explain.
“Part of it is about this rabbit who hops around with a basket of colored eggs and ….”
Gordie said, “Rabbits don’t lay eggs.”
“He didn’t LAY the eggs, he just got them.”
“Where? From the store? What is a rabbit doing in a store? Stores don’t allow mere rabbits to come in, to they? Easter Rabbit – how silly.”
“I’ve heard about the Easter Beaver,” said Nicker.
“No, that’s an eager beaver,” Danny explained.
“Ahhh, he is eager for Easter? Does he carry eggs?” asked Nicker.
“Beavers don’t have eggs,” said Danny.
“Neither do rabbits,” said Gordie, “but tortoises have eggs.”
Nicker had a big grin, “Tortoises don’t have baskets, though, and tortoises can’t hop.”
Gordie tried to grin. That’s difficult for a tortoise. “I’ll find a basket. And I’ll learn to hop. I remember the story of a rabbit and a tortoise. The tortoise won the race. If you really want Easter eggs you should ask for the Easter Tortoise.”
Well, as you might imagine, once Gordie gets an idea, there is no talking him out of it.
He practiced. He did his best. He tried to hop like a real bunny.
THUMP! He crashed to the ground.
He tried again.
WHACK!!! He crashed to the ground.
After another THUD!!!!!, Gordie crawled off to home so he could think this over. He was very disappointed. He didn’t have a basket. He didn’t have any eggs. He hadn’t even learned how to hop.
There were be no Easter Tortoise, at least not this year.
When Gordie got up the next morning, it was to a special surprise. Sitting by the opening to his cavern was a basket. A very special basket. It didn’t have eggs in it, although they were shaped liked eggs. Tiny eggs. Purple eggs. But, they weren’t eggs.
Can you guess what the Easter Danny brought for Gordie?

Yes! Gordie couldn’t quite be the Easter Tortoise, but the Easter Danny brought him a basket of Easter Grapes! Gordie was very happy again as he chomped his special Easter Treat.
