RePeet was sick, and Captain Kazoo was very concerned. RePeet was the captain’s best friend. Something was very wrong. RePeet would mope around the house all day and not show an interest in much of anything. Captain Kazoo would play him songs, tell him stories, and even do funny dances. At most, RePeet would turn his head very slowly to watch.
Perhaps worst of all, when RePeet talked at all, he would say things only once, instead of twice. That just wasn’t like him. He got his name, RePeet, because he always said things twice. RePeet repeated.
“Pete, what’s wrong?” he asked – and right away knew his mistake. RePeet had been only one word, so Captain Kazoo … well, he gave him one name. It was just awful for the captain! Then it got even worse. RePeet answered “w r o n g” very slowly – and just once.
Captain Kazoo brushed RePeet’s feathers. He polished RePeet’s beak. Nothing did any good.
Then he got an idea. “I bet Emily can help.”
In case you didn’t know, Emily is Nicker’s mother, and Nicker is a sea dragon (so of course, Emily is also a sea dragon). It’s a funny thing about sea dragons. Only children can see them. Adults never seem able. They listen to the children patiently, with a smile. “Yes, dear, I see it.” But they don’t – not even if you point to exactly where the sea dragon is there on the water or behind a bush.
There are just two adults who can see them. One is Santa Claus. The other is Captain Kazoo. Both are very good friends with the sea dragon family.
Another thing about sea dragons is that they travel all over (and very fast). They’ve seen a lot of strange things normal people never see – and they know things normal people never know. Captain Kazoo hoped that Emily would know what to do for a sick parrot.
He bundled up RePeet to keep him warm, put on his very best captain’s hat, and off they went in the Kazoomobile. It was a bit of a drive to where the sea dragon family lives. All the way, RePeet sat on his perch in silence. He didn’t even look out the window of the Kazoomobile.
It happened that the sea dragon family was all there, including some Captain Kazoo didn’t know – but they knew about him, so they didn’t even hide. Instead, they all wanted to help – all that the same time.
“Is he getting plenty of seed?”
“Maybe he needs a new perch to sit on.”
“I bet he’s lonely. Let’s get him a pet kitty.”
“I’ll go get the nail clippers to trim his claws.”
      “Let’s throw him a party!”
      “Toys, lotsa toys.”
“Shouldn’t he have an ice pack?”
      “Coffee?”
      “No, tea.”
      “No, warm milk.”
      “Give him a bath.”
“He needs a hair cut, except he doesn’t have hair.”
      “Feather cut!”
      “Take him ice skating.”
      “What’s his temperature?”
“I think there is still some chocolate cake left.”
“We could take him for a ride in a hot air balloon.”
“Cotton candy, that’s what he needs.”
      “A new swim suit.”
Just then Simon came in. The others were still all talking at once – all of them except RePeet. He wasn’t saying anything at all. He was barely moving.
“What’s wrong with RePeet?” Simon asked in his deep voice. You might already know this about Simon. Even when he whispers, windows rattle. It rumbles like a blast of thunder, and you rumble with it. Everyone went silent when he talked.
Captain Kazoo explained, “He’s sick, and he’s getting worse. We don’t know what to do. We’ve tried everything we can think of. RePeet just keeps moving slower and slower.”
Simon moved over and looked closely at RePeet, then sniffed. He turned around and said, “He just needs a new battery.”
Well, of course! RePeet isn’t an ordinary parrot. He doesn’t eat parrot seeds, he doesn’t eat fruits – and only rarely eats cotton candy. He has a battery that goes into a compartment in the back. It just happened that they had a battery that was just the right size. Captain Kazoo opened the little door and removed the old battery, then put in the new one. Immediately, RePeet’s head came up and his wings flapped, and his head twisted back and forth, back and forth.
“Look at him!” said Captain Kazoo.
“Look at him look at him,” said RePeet happily as he flapped his wings.
      “This is wonderful,” said Nicker.
“This is wonderful this is wonderful,” said RePeet as he waggled his head.
And so – as is said at the end of many stories – they lived happily ever after.
